Study on warehouse and logistics management at Delhivery (MBA Operations)

Introduction

Delhivery is an Indian logistics and supply chain company, based in Gurgaon. It was founded in 2011 by Sahil Barua, Mohit Tandon, Bhavesh Manglani, Suraj Saharan, and Kapil Bharati. The company has over 85 fulfillment centers, 24 automated sort centers, 70 hubs, 7,500+ partner centers, and 3,000+ direct delivery centers, as of 2021. About two-thirds of its revenue comes from providing third-party logistics and delivery services to e-commerce companies.

Delhivery starts as a local express delivery for brick and mortar stores, before starting to serve e-commerce clients exclusively. To do this, Delihvery offers four types of services: express, fulfillment center-based, freight, and cross-border. Delhivery Express focuses on door-to-door deliveries from clients to customers, while Delhivery Fulfillment provides warehousing services for faster product shipping to customers. Delhivery Freight provides domestic truckload shipping for the Indian market and Delhivery Cross-border provides Indian clients with international shipping services for import or export.

Warehouse and logistics management are crucial components of supply chain management that involve the efficient planning, coordination, and execution of various activities related to the storage, movement, and distribution of goods. Effective warehouse and logistics management contribute to minimizing costs, improving customer satisfaction, and ensuring timely delivery of products. Warehouses are usually large plain buildings used for commercial purposes for storage of goods and are commonly used by exporters, importers, wholesalers, manufacturers etc. Warehouses are crucial components of most modern supply chains and are likely to be involved in various stages of the sourcing, production and distribution of goods, from the handling of raw materials and work-in-progress through to finished products. Logistics management involves the planning, implementation, and control of the movement of goods, information, and resources from the point of origin to the point of consumption.

Warehouse and logistics management includes activities such as:

  1. Keeping track of inventory levels, ensuring accurate stock counts, and preventing overstocking or stockouts.
  2. Organizing goods within the warehouse to maximize space utilization and ease of access.
  3. Efficiently picking, packing, and shipping products to fulfill customer orders accurately and quickly.
  4. Inspecting incoming shipments, verifying quantities and quality, and updating inventory records.
  5. Implementing measures to ensure the quality of products stored in the warehouse.
  6. Planning the layout of the warehouse to maximize storage capacity and minimize unnecessary movement.
  7. Using technology such as warehouse management systems (WMS), barcoding, RFID, and automation to streamline operations and improve accuracy.
  8. Selecting the appropriate mode of transportation (road, rail, air, sea) based on factors like cost, speed, and distance.
  9. Determining the most efficient routes for goods to travel to minimize transit times and costs.
  10. Choosing reliable and cost-effective carriers and managing their performance.
  11. Ensuring that goods are packaged appropriately to prevent damage during transit and reduce shipping costs.
  12. Handling all necessary paperwork, permits, customs declarations, and other documentation for international shipments.
  13. Providing real-time tracking of shipments to monitor their status and anticipate potential delays.
  14. Mitigating risks related to theft, damage, natural disasters, and other potential disruptions to the supply chain.
  15. By optimizing processes and reducing inefficiencies, companies can lower storage, transportation, and operational costs.
  16. Timely and accurate order fulfillment leads to higher customer satisfaction and loyalty.
  17. Efficient inventory management prevents overstocking and stockouts, which helps to maintain optimal stock levels.
  18. Streamlining operations through technology and automation improves overall efficiency.
  19. A well-managed supply chain can respond quickly to changing market demands and disruptions.
Both warehouse and logistics management are interconnected and crucial for ensuring the smooth flow of goods from suppliers to consumers, ultimately contributing to a company's success in the market.
